Thanks guys I've screwed the rack to a fence post already and good point bout the onions, a mate of mine is farm manager for Collets and laughed when I said I'd sown 200 seeds!  They drill 200,000 per acre!!!

How long do the onions have to be before you can plant them out onto the plot?  They are all poking through nicely at the moment about 3/4in high.

And how long will it take before I can plant them?

Cheers

Yours have presumably yet to fully straighten out the seed leaves - I'd grow them on until they get their first true leaves - they are too young and fragile to plant out now.

(I'm assuming you do mean three-quarters of an inch rather than 3-4 inches!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Fair dos to you for doing from seed, that is brave!  I admire what you're doing and I think I'll give it a go next year.  This is going to be my 3rd year growing veg and I just planted a big bag of sets today.  Sorry I can't offer any advice as last year and year before I did sets, but they were delicious.  This year I've fertilised the ground and hopefully they'll be nicer still.

Thanks I've never grown em before and I'm still in my first year as a veggie gardener just thought I'd try and grow everything from seed from the off

With the advice on this site it does make things much easier though  ;)

What is this early tomato experiment you speak off?  I may have inadvertantly become involved as I have 4 types about an inch high on the windowsill as we type!!

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Right.

One question - should I manure (now), before I plant my sets?

Yes or no?

I have er, 'excess' manure to use up, (I know the farmer, so the load was rather 'large').
so was thinking of putting some under the onions.

I can't put it anywhere else because roots are going there.

I can't store the excess this year, I haven't got the space until I maybe 'rearrange' a part of my lotty.  ::)

If you've got it, and it's well rotted, bang it in!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It is  :D

It'll be a good year old, and it has no smell so the 'rotting down' part must be past.

Glad I've found this thread as I was given some red onion seed today and didn't have a clue what to do with it!

Well they seem to be taking a while to grow long enough to transplant, is that normal?

I've been hardening them off for a week and was going to put them high up on the rack in case we get a ground frost!

When do you thiink i'll be able to put them in the plot?

Have to confess I bought a bag of sets on saturday in Wilko's coz I'm not convinced they're gonna be ok!
