Ducks and Hens
« on: November 12, 2011, 13:53 »
Good afternoon

I would really like a duck or two. Indian runners are my aim. Would this type of duck be ok to be kept with hybrids (blue ranger, black tail and black rock). Would the duck have to be part of a pair or would the chickens be enough company?

Thanks

Janina
love my chickens me! :-)

I would get a couple of ducks to go with your hens.  Its easier to intergrate two rather than one and ducks stick together!  They will live happily with Hens though  ;)

thanks for the reply! whats the best type of house for ducks? obviously they dont perch as hens do so they cannot share their house so i was thinking just removing the perches from another wooden house, also, do ducks require a nesting box?

Thanks again!  :)

Mine are in an old coop with the bars removed.  I do have a couple of old filing cabinet drawers in there that they lay in quite happily!

There have been times when the ducks and hens have all slept together and thats no stopped only because they now have seperate large runs each!

Go for it you know you want ducks as well  ;)

i really do want ducks! which are the best breed to keep, i really like the look of Indian Runners, but am a bit limited on space (not sure whether they would need a lot?) I'm not really too bothered about them laying, i have enough egs from the chooks, but a lovely duck egg would make a welcome change once in a while!

I just need to talk the OH into letting me have some - he has already said no, but he said that about the Chickens and he ended up buying them for my Birthday!  :tongue2:

Runners are great!  They need the same space as hens and the eggs are really nice!!

Just grind your other half down lol Wifey just rolls her eyes when I come back with something new now
