Tramping on each others eggs?
« on: November 09, 2011, 19:37 »

We have 5 chooks with the choice of three nest boxes yet, they all want to use the same box causing them to stand on each others eggs!  :(

We're both out all day at work so we can't nip in and collect the eggs as they come so, any ideas on what to do??

Help!  :(

I'm afraid I have no suggestions for you.  Just to say I'd be interested to see what ideas people come up with.

you can buy rollaway nest boxes so that when an egg is laid it dissapears before the next hen comes in  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have never found it to be a problem. At the moment I have four hens and they just about always lay in the same box. I have never yet had a broken egg.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

Rollaway nest boxes seem like an excellent idea.  Alos do your nest boxes have plenty of padding in the bottom?  You could lay some astroturf-type stuff on the bottom, then soft bedding like wood shavings on top, with a lip at the front to stop them kicking it out.

All my girls lay in one nest box (despite others being available) but I've never had a broken egg.  I wonder if a softer layer might help your situation.

Otherwise - rollaway is the answer!

The boxes  are the size of those blue mesh boxes what you see some  fruit come in. They have fluffed up straw in them, yet still they're able to stand on each others eggs!  :tongue2:  :(
