Carrots in winter
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:28 »
Hi

Now the potatoes are harvested I have space for some carrots. Will they keep ok in the ground during winter unprotected?

Yes, but they may get too frozen to be lifted, just like parsnips  ::) Pick axe in the shed? :D

I've just planted my last batch of the year. No pick axe here, but I do have a lump hammer and chisel  :)

Well, I say last batch, I may well start some off in boxes in the greenhouse come September  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Tried the late carrot Nantes Frubund last year in a large tub in the greenhouse, must say they are not worth the effort. 2 weeks ago I sowed a double row of Autumn King and hoping for fair crop.

We're trying Royal Chantenay for a late crop, mainly because almost all the other carrot seeds we tried either failed to germinate or had their tops chopped off by something or other.

This is a shorter carrot so should be easier to lift if the soil is frozen, and all sellers say it's a good keeper. Never tried them before, so it's a bit of an experiment.

You can leave them in the ground but you may loose them to slugs. Mice also eat them. Provided they are not eaten they will keep but if they are frozen solid they usually go soft and rot when they thaw.

Their own tops will protect them to some extent but best to draw a litle soil round them. Later in the Winter cover them with a layer of straw, bracken or whatever else you have handy.

I just leave mine in uncovered.

One or two may get nibbled tops, but I've never had a problem with slugs or thawed out carrots - not even last winter when I chiseled them our for Christmas dinner.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I had Autumn King that I sowed about this time last year.

They survived just fine under the snow, and although didn't bulk up hugely were still worth growing  :)

I've sown two rows of Autumn King this last week.

Some seed packets say June is the latest month, others say July.

My plot ever-knowledgeable friend Dennis says the last week in July, so who am I to argue...

On this occasion, I wouldn't argue with Denis, but I still wouldn't run a roller over them!
