plum blossoming, fingers crossed
« on: March 31, 2011, 09:42 »
My plum will be in full blossom by the weekend so fingers crossed we get no frosts for the next week or so. Last year the poor tree was frosted before the bees had time to pollinate the flowers and I only got a handful of plums in the summer.
Temperatures look ok for the next few days but heavy rain may strip the blossom off

Hoping for better results this year  :)

My Damson (Merryweather) is in full bloom too!  I was going to get rid of it as it gets loads of aphid damage and loses a lot of fruit and leaves.  This year I am going to treat the aphid infestation with soapy water in the hope I can get a decent crop for some more wine.

There's an 'old boy' trick here of boiling rhubarb leaves and spraying against aphids  with the strained solution mixed with washing up liquid.

Just need to point out, Hobnails, that such a remedy is unlicensed thus not legal to use.  Therefore the forum can't endorse or condone such suggestions.

All of my plum family trees (greengage, Victoria, damson and wild cherry plum) have produced masses of blossom this year. It does seem to go in two year cycles and as there's warm weather forecast there should be enough insects around for pollination.
The Victoria and greengage are still only 3/4 years old (bought from Lidl) and the woodpigeons tend to eat the teeny plums but I can hope....

I planted my golden gage around a dozen years ago. It took it two or three years to get going, but ever since then it's produced a huge crop every single year, regardless of weather, pigeon flocks, squirrels, whatever. The only thing I ever have to watch out for is making sure I pick them when they're just starting to think about turning ripe, because if you leave it one minute later the wasps will get into them.

My little patio plum flowered early and there are not many petals left amongst the leaves. It had a few nights of frost on it, but as it is it's first year with us I don't mind if it doesn't produce.

All I need to find out now is how to effectively combat brown rot.  It spoils a good crop and we need the wine !   Cheers,   Tony.
