Care and nurture v 'bung `em in'.....
« on: February 24, 2011, 15:55 »
Is care and nurture the best way to grow plants or do they do better if bunged in and left to get on with it?
A few of the onions from 2009 started to sprout before i had chance to eat them so i planted them again to save some seed. Autumn 2010 i had plenty of seed saved and also 5 seed heads that had formed bulb-lets so i cut the heads with an inch of stalk and pressed them into some pots of used (ex carrot) soil and left them out to the mercy of frost and snow.
I have just split the bunches and pricked a few dozen out and they are lovely sturdy plants like 4" nails and better than any i have grown from seed in past years.
What the end crop will be like is anybodies guess.
Cracking afternoon to be in the garden with the hens hindering. :) over 70`f in the greenhouse, must put the auto opener back in !

Sounds like you've got very healthy stock growing that probably won't need much help from you after they're planted. The only thing I'd recommend is to keep weeds under control and water if you get any dry spells. Onions will grow through drought but they'll be very strong and almost too tearful to eat.
