carrot fly life cycle
« on: August 20, 2010, 17:16 »
I intend to sow my carrots ready for the winter again (did some last year around the end of August time and had a great crop around Christmas and beyond).

last year I put loads of fleece over the patch to deter the carrot fly. This year, however, I have run out of fleece. Sure, I could get some more and do what I did last year but is there much need for the fleece when planting at this time of the year? - especially given that by the time the carrots germinate and get established the carrot flies might have died off

I sowed some more carrots recently as a fellow plot holders swears he avoids carrot fly damage by sowing in August.  I covered my earlier crop with fleece but haven't bothered with this lot, so why don't we do a trial Ian and compare notes?

I'd like to join in with this. I have'nt grown carrots this year due to lack of space, but now that my spuds are coming up it makes sense to follow with something usefull for the winter.
Has anyone got any recomended variety's?

I grow carrots under environmesh and usually have no fly problems.

Last winter the net got weighed down with snow and no longer covered the bed properly.  After the snow had melted I poked around for any remaining carrots.  There were some which were perfectly healthy apart from the tell tale burrowings.

?

I don't think carrot fly ever goes out of season.

There is an overwintering Nantes carrot, sold by T & M which you can sow about now.  I will try some, but I don't hold up much hope.

yes I will trial it without this year. If it doesnt work, well no matter - I still have a fair lot in the freezer stored if not! And even frozen home grown carrots are infinitely better than the tasteless supermarket ones

I am sowing 8 varieties (two of which are carrot fly "resistant") as I did last year.

None of these varieties are specifically designed for late sowing (the packets say sow April to june) but as I said above, that hardly mattered last year when I sowed them late August (and indeed the year before) as I got a fantastic crop each time.
