So impatient!!
« on: July 29, 2010, 13:46 »
Ok so because I only just got going in July and missed the sowing times for lots of veggies (gotta wait for next year) I'm bored! I so wanna do stuff but cant.  >:(

I only have 1 large planter and 2 smaller ones I dont have an allotment (although I wish I did).
My tomatoes are not doing much nicely sat there waiting to go red.
My chilli plant my mum bought me is sooooo slow to do much.
I planted my peas late and they are growing nicely up the canes but no flowers yet.
My lettuce and rocket salad is slow again nothing much yet.
My radish is very impressive growing really fast
and my beetroot is not doing much either....

Am I mega late wi stuff and have no hope of anything OR am I just being impatient??

The goal of life is not to arrive at the graveyard in a well preserved body, but instead to skid in sideways, totally worn out yelling "What a ride!".

the latter. impatience
I started in feb and my
chillies are looking promising with flowers but one chilli in 4 plants.
lots of green toms and nothing had ripen.
planting late peas will give you late crop and just wait for it to flower.

I could never grow rocket this year at plot coz of watering problems but rocket when they grow you cant stop them.

radish if it is scarlet globe, pull it between 30-35 days of sowing, otherwise they go stringy.
enjoy the slowness of the nature... :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

Agree with you prakash_mib - gardeners need lots of patience.  ;) Trouble is that some gardening programmes on the TV give the impression that everything can be done in no time at all. Colleensj - enjoy what you do get for this year and then start to plan for next. Good gardening  :)

If there is room anywhere you still have time to plant some things. Pak Choi is fast growing and tolerant of the cold so can be sown for some time yet, there are also other fast growing salad crops (spring onions etc..) that could be planted, and you can near enough watch them grow while you are waiting for your main crops to come into fruition.

Oh that was me the other day.... I was pacing the floor every morning looking like a father in the waiting room!
But this morning I have just one that is a slightly orangier shade of green (if that's even a colour)

We had a nice sunny day here in Yorkshire yesterday and I think it made all the difference to my toms
Keeping fingers crossed for some more

"Orangier shade of green" hmmmm perhaps we should start a shade chart for tomato growers.

Find some cheap seed, Wilkinsons, Lidl, Netto etc and try swede, turnip, carrot, parsnip.

Bit late but worth a try and most, except carrot, are a winter veg, so just leave them a bit later. :D :D

Seen turnip grown and pulled when small they don't have to grow to full size. ::)

Would suggest spring onion but all mine, planted out weeks ago are still 2-3 inches and feeble.

Also get prepared for garlic and overwintering onions.

Very late for parsnip in my opinion.

Slow to germinate and grow and they'll stop growth as soon as it gets cooler. They need a long growing season.

Carrots on the other hand are quick top germinate, (some I sowed a week or so back took 3 days), and you should have time to get something from them before they stop.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I sewed some parsnip in my green house about 3 weeks ago and they've just come through....blimey that took some doing. I'm way too late I know  :(

But hey progress at last. I FINALLY have one....JUST ONE fully orange tomato on my plant   :nowink:
and my chillis are making fast progress.....  :D
Radishes looking very nice indeed and my peas are shooting up (still no flowers yet though).
I have planted a few carrots that I germinated from seed about a month ago, didn't know if I was too late but will give em a go.

Thanx for all the advice guys, much appreciated. I must learn to be patient.
For now I shall have to just prepare and plan for next year!
