hi ya   i put some onion sets in 3 week ends ago theres no shoots as yet , did i put them in to early, or am i ipatient, was it to cold when i put them in ........pete

Did they go straight in the ground?  They are probably still putting out roots.

I planted mine about three weeks ago, 4 or 5 of them (planted 30) are just showing, I was well excited until my neighbour called round and said "the first to show might have bolted"

That's nonsense. You can't say anything's bolted until it's run to seed earlier than it should.

I pulled at one of my shallots today.  They look the same as when I planted them except for loads of white roots underneath.  Just a touch more patience before you see that tip of green

They will all come to life within a week or so of each other. Just watch for any that are perhaps being pulled by birds. Have got 90 Turbo sets planted in a big drawer of compost in the greenhouse. When everyone is shooting they go out!

I just bunged mine straight in the ground a few weeks back, they're all shooting with no faffing!

Mine went in today.  The funny thing with onion sets is they seem to be doing nothing, then one day you look and you have a whole row of green shoots 

For your neighbour to say they have bolted is just nonsense.    They can't possibly have bolted already.

Trillium is spot on. Quite often some people are well meaning or just want something to chat about so say first thing that pops into their head.

Thankfully, I have taken a lot of advice from here that has helped me no end.
