what is chicken mash and is it cooked porridge that's given to chickens?

Hi Evie, well you can get layers mash which is chicken food in dusty powdery form, or people make a mash for their chickens from oats and stuff.

My Dad used to boil up all our old veg peelings, any leftover veg from dinner, boil it all up in an old saucepan and drain it a bit, but still leave some of the water in it, add porridge oats and stir it while letting the oats cook a little, and the chooks would have it on a cold winter's day just before bed.

I still occasionally do it, but I have to make it specially as we have far too many chooks for our little bit of veg peelings to be any good!

I never give it to them during the summer months though.

You wait until you give it to them.  Once they realise what the saucepan has in it, you'll get mugged as soon as they see you!!!   :D :D :D

I used to make porridge for mine in the winter months but resorted to just adding hot water to their layers pellets which mashed down well and they enjoyed that just as much.  It was a nice warming breakfast.
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.
