chicken feed (mash)
« on: November 20, 2011, 20:05 »
Hi all, i am trying to work out some sum's on feeding chickens but need some advise.
If i had 12 chickens how much food would i need to feed them for one year.
I did have a stab at it and i came up with20kg bag for one chicken at £15.
I bet i'm a mile out.
Sorry if this has been asked before....
I'm lost without my SatNav.

Leave you to do the math....  on average a healthy large fowl bird should be consuming on average 125g of food per day (this is pellet of mash - not counting treats which are to be given sparingly) to produce eggs and keep in good condition.
This does vary between breed so is a rough guide. My Polled bantams only consume on average 110g per day, even smaller birds such as Belgium or Dutch bants would require av 95g per day.
Pellet and mash food have a shelf life of 3 months so don't go buying all the food you need for a year in one go!
Hope this helps!  :D
1 fiance, 3 kids, 1 fish, 1 cat, 9 poland bantams, 6 Barbu de Watermael, 2 allotment plots and not enough time!

£15 a bag?  Really?  Most people around here are charging £9 - £10 which I thought was bad enough.  I only used to charge £7!

OK I've done the math... with help from teenage son as these new fangled decimal point thingumys baffle me  it works out at 28 bags (20kg ones) per year for 12 birds! If you want to be prescice it's 2.33333333333333333333333333 recurring bags per bird per year!!! (see me head hurts now!!!  :D )
And second the other comment - £15 per bag!!!!! RIP OFF!!!! I pay £8 for 20kg of medicated Marriages feed!!! Shop around!
Now going to work out how much my 9 birds costs me each year as never even thought about working it out!!  :nowink:

That quantity sounds about right.  My six chooks eat one 25kg bag of food each month (on average).

Of course it depends on how much you're losing to mice and/or wild birds as well.  My feed costs have gone down a lot since I got a treadle feeder.

Agree £15 is a ripp off!! It also depends on how free range they are as to how much feed they need :)

£15 a bag sounds like organic feed (something like Allen and Page organic feed company) and if I had just the three or four hens I would go back to using as I thought the egg yolks tasted nicer.

I pay £7.50 for a 20kg bag and 2 of those will last my 12 ladies a month.
The maths is simples.

My feed is 18€ per 25kg and I use at least one a week with 14 differently sized birds (brahmas down to sabelpoots).

I think I worked out receintly it cost over £300 a year to feed them lol!
