Day old chicky with gammy leg
« on: June 22, 2010, 16:23 »
I don't think it's splay legs but it does look a problem.

1 leg is where it should be and the other he/she is holding to the side and keeping the weight off it more often then not.

Any suggestions please?

Have a feel up the leg to see if there is a dislocation.  Or any warmth which may indicate an infection.

Sometimes chicks splay on only one leg, so hobbling may still be an option.

If the chick can't get around any better after a couple of days, or it looks like it isn't competeing with it's broodmates for food and water... well  :(

Can't feel anything unusually warm.  He will put it down but then seems to realise it's uncomfortable and lifts it out to the side.

He's eating and drinking and getting around ok so fingers crossed.

Only way i can describe it, it is stuck right out to the side, he is hopping about on it and still eating etc, but won't get any better i don't think. It looks as though it is shaking as well.

I've seen people taping them and also little gadgets for splay legs but I have no idea if they are worth it.  I guess you first have to be sure what it is.
