Galvanised drinker problem??
« on: May 25, 2010, 18:41 »
Hi,

Last week I bought my girls a large galvanised drinker from MVF.   Even though I have cleaned it before use during the day the water turns 'milky'.

A friend of mine says recently she read in 'Country Smallholder' that zinc is bad for poultry - I am worried the cloudy water may be the zinc coming of the drinker from the galvanisation process.

Any advice please?   I have washed it really well again but it still turns milky.

Thanks!!

I don't know, I'm sure someone else does though.

Can't imagine that it can be anything to do with zinc or being bad for poultry - why would they sell them and so many people use them?

good luck

i use a galvanised drinker and it is fine.

are you adding anything to the water for the chickens ? apple cider vinegar etc ?

an addition to the water may cause the problem, and i would advise that only fresh water be used in a galvanised drinker, use a plastic one for any addatives that you may want to give

I have kept chickens for over 3 years and have used the same galvanised drinkers, never had to replace them and have had absolutely no problems with them at all.

Don't know if i'm right with this - when i use to do metalworking & used galvanised material it sometimes came coated with a light oil.
Adding water to this would sometimes give a milky effect to the water.
Perhaps this is you problem ?

I am just using normal water with nothing added.  I can't see there would be a problem as I bought it from a reputable supplier but I will just have to give it a bit more time.

Sounds very odd, maybe you should mention it to the supplier?
