Geese and chickens?
« on: January 22, 2010, 21:21 »
Hi all, we have been thinking about getting some geese in addition to our 5 chickens.  As it happens we were offered 3 today by a friend of a friends.  The question is, will they be ok with the chickens - I presume so...any comments are appreciated.  The other question I have is that if we adopt 2 of the 3 geese, 1 male and 1 female will they be able to mate and produce offspring if they are brother and sister?! Thanks for your advice.

A friend of mine kept geese and chickens, wasn't long before he separated them as the geese would bully the chickens despite a huge area to free range.
Re: breeding, tbh not a good idea to breed brother to sister although dad to offspring is usually fine, depending on strain generations etc
Saying that I don't keep geese and maybe a goosy person can give better advice! :)

Thanks Foxy...I do wonder if the brother might not help himself to his sister, if you catch my drift.  I presume we cant stop them getting it on.

A friend of mine had geese and hens running together and the only time there was conflict was at feeding times.

He had his hens for months, no eggs, so he asked me could he borrow a cockerel to try and get the hens laying.
He has a few acres, and I had noticed the geese took a strong dislike to my cockerel, but he was too quick for them (or so I thought).
After feeding them one day, and locking up, I heard an almighty commotion, by the time I unlocked the first gate, I could see them attacking the cockerel, then they left him prostrate,
I got the second gate open and they were attacking him again.
I eventually opened the third gate, chased the geese away, and picked up my poorly cockerel.
He was badly battered but made a complete recovery with some TLC

I have three geese and keep them seperate from my chicks.

I've had no problem keeping geese + chickens together, even though there are times the geese do try and pull feathers from the chickens.
