evening all,

i have some celery plants in and all i did was plant them out and leave them.

they are lovely and healthy but not gaining any height.

is there anything i can do to bring them upwards of have i left it to late now?

Hi

My best celery is grown in wide pots which sit year round in a gravel tray which is always full of water.

By now they start to get scraggy - so I sow regularly straight into pots which also sit in water and now have a year round supply. They stay in the greenhouse all winter, if I didn't have a greenhouse they would sit in a coldframe - and the water topped up regularly.

The main thing with celery is they love water - and if you grow them close enough in pots they self blanch anyway.

I'd sow more now, and start harvesting the ones that you have grown.

I have a similar problem Nathan, but according to this page harvesting for non-blanching types would be later in Dec/Jan so they should carry on growing at the moment.

So I suppose it depends on what type you have.  Certainly, mine are totally inedible right now.

I'm growing giant red and didn't trench up because I read on this page that it wasn't necessary.

...but mine aren't looking anything like theirs - they're quite low lying and growth is outwards not upwards.  I've mulched and mulched and watered and watered continuously.

This week I wrapped a couple in corrugated cardboard in the hope that they'll start to grow upwards, but I'm not at all sure.....

Any extra advice about what to do at this point is welcome....
