if they are fully grown chucks kept in this size pen then yes they certainly need to be reported, go onto the DEFRA website and report it to them, although they can be a bit of a pain sometimes they really do do an excellent job and they will do something about it
I'm afraid that even DEFRA dont do much! they paid a visit to our local garden centre who had 4 big chooks in a 2 mtr sq run and their house took up about half of that space, but because stocking densities are so tight there is little that will be done(you only have to look at intesively reared chickens to get an idea of that!) unless they are ill/dying or being miss treated in some way such as no food or water, in the laws eyes they are doing nothing wrong!
I was the one who kicked up a real fuss when i have been to my garden centre but it fell on deaf ears! (this was the garden centre who were selling ducklings at easter and my friend spotted a little girl in a shop carrying 1 around in a bag!  )

that really is disgusting, is this the garden centre close to you?  I think i know the one you mean, the trouble with these sort of places is that they argue that the turn over of the chickens is great enough to warrent them being kept in small areas. but to allow birds being taken out in bags is rediculas, PM me the details of this place and i will pass this on to the frontline team, I know the woman who is involved with this very well and they will look into it.

Hi,

Sorry I completely forgot to repost on this!

Right they are let out and they have food and water.  I think now, I keep checking whenever I go!  that they were young as they look bigger now in the chest region particularly, and there are a lot less so I think maybe the owner breeds them and sells them.  Would also explain the cockerel in the other run.

I think the run could still do with being a bit bigger tbh but I wouldn't class it is cruel anymore, they have enough space to move about a bit, think there were 4 last count.

I keep checking them though.
