slugs on my beetroot ???
« on: August 31, 2009, 20:47 »
I am relatively new to gardening (2nd yr  on my plot) and was made up with how all of the veg was coming on .... but went to get my 1st crop of beetroot today and shock !! ..I cant believe it !!! something has been nibbling little holes through them !! Most of them are ruined.  I am so cheesed off cos I was particularly looking forward to the beetroot and had planted loads of them.  The leaves looked so healthy.  I recon its thedemon slugs - next year I am going to wage a mercyless war on them and throw everything possible in there !! Got any good suggestions ?

It may well be long tailed fieldmice that are eating your beetroot. Look and see if there are toothmarks.

Just ignore the little holes and enjoy the beetroot. Are you sure it's slugs as they usually make rather large holes. I've lost loads of beetroot this year through birds attacking the young plants. If you have trouble with slugs, put down little mounds of soft bran around your plants, the slugs love it and it stops them from devouring your crops (or at least that's the theory).

If you have lost the beetroot bit dont comletely give up and throw the leaves away, use them like spinach then freeze them in yoghurt pots for use later, I think they have a nicer more irony taste than the spinach I grew

Are you sure it wasn't some kind of underground attack on your beetroots, maybe some kind of insect larvae in the soil?

My plot was infested with slugs and snails this year! My cabbages were totaly ruined, but my row of beetroots right next to them somehow avoided the invasion and survived untouched! A mystery! Maybe they just prefer cabbages if they have a choice!
