No carrot fly this year.
« on: August 20, 2009, 10:23 »
Hi,

Well I'm lucky that I haven't had any carrot fly on my 1 row of carrots which I didn't net.

Is there less of a chance or more of a chance I could get it next year ? Or equal ?

They went in a bit late - May 16th. Is that why  ?

Thanks
Garddwr

Depends on the weather I think.
Our site used to be bad for carrot fly but the last wo years have been pretty good.
I think they have drowned.
If it's dry next year I suppose we will have carrot fly instead of blight.

I had my carrots covered with fleece until the fleece became too small, a neighbour of 83 years of age said "don't bother about that we don't have carrot fly here".
I removed the fleece around two months ago and have lots of fine carrots, perhaps they are more prevalent in some areas. I don't know as this is my first year of growing.

Just to cheer you up. Carrot fly are active until mid September so they could yet invade your carrots.

I did 3 short rows of carrots that I ended up 'putting through the mill'
I temporarily put cut and come again lettuce between the rows just until I some other ground prepared, but with one thing and another I let the lettuce over grow the space so the carrots didn't have enough light, the leaves were yellowy and the carrots small. These carrots also had carrot fly damage.

Yet 3 weeks after sowing the first carrots I put another short row in only about 6 foot away from the attacked ones,  with clear air all round and those carrots have no damage at all and I have nearly used them all up , I'm gutted that I didn't put more in at the time !!!
