BNS 64sq ft and still not a 1.
« on: August 14, 2009, 23:03 »
Im getting a little anxious, I've got 64sq ft of sprawling BNS (2 plants) and as far as I can tell there's not 1 fruit on them. I don't think theres even been a female flower yet.

I've not grown BNS before are things letting too late for them to flower, fruit and ripen before the first frost? If theres no chance of a crop I'd much rather dig the lot up now and plant something I will get a meal from.

If you have absolutely nothing I would get rid of it and plant something else.  In my experience, and that's not much with BNS, it's too late for a crop if you have nothing now.

My BNS have been reluctant to grow too. All my other squash and pumpkin varieties are being very prolific with their fruit. The BNS were the last to take off after I planted them out too. Not sure whether this is normal or they are very fussy with this years weather. Oh well.

I agree with Ice - best replace them if no fruit as yet or else give them a good pruning and see if they convert leaf growth to fruits and grow other stuff in the newly free areas perhaps?

I am going to grow a variety of squash again next year and see which ones do best.

Tode:

See here for a description of BNS. Very tasty and can be used in lots of recipes. Very nice baked in the oven too.

Its supposed to be one of these http://www.thompson-morgan.com/seeds1/product/951/1.html but its turned out to be a complete waste of space.

Does anyone else want to vote before I consign it to the great compost bin in the sky ?

I guess it will depend on whether you have something else to grow in that space really?  If not I would go with the suggestion of pruning it and seeing if this encourages some fruit growth.  At the very least it is holding back the weeds in the space you are growing it!

LEAVE IT! STEP AWAY FROM THE SQUASH
Patience grasshopper my squash just sat there doing * all in the last month they have started to run I have had a look amongst the leaves and spotted the odd fruit but there is plenty of time yet and there would be nothing more gutting than to chop out the plant only to find it covered in imature fruit that you had never seen.

Lardman - it's a real pain when your BNS don't ripen, or even set for that matter, and over the last few years I've had both problems and have yet to pick a ripe fruit.

This year was going to be my last attempt if I failed again, but the Harrier F1s are ripening nicely, and they are bushy rather than trailing so take up less space. Something to consider tof the future perhaps?
