Patio Apple Tree Seeds
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:40 »
Hi,

I'm a novice gardener/allotment holder.

I want to grow an apple tree from seed for my back patio, but can't find anywhere that sells seeds. If possible, I would like the tree to carry more than 1 variety of eating apples, though that is not essential - 1 nice variety will do. I would need a small, hardy tree that produces a heavy crop and is self pollinating. Needless to say, the more attractive the tree the better. Does anyone know where I could get seeds that would do the job?

There is a variety of apple trees called Coronet which seem perfect, but the trees cost about 50 euro.

Cheers.

It is not possible to grow an apple tree of this sort from seeds.  The variety you want needs to be grafted onto a rootstock which will keep the tree very small.

There are a number of nurseries in the UK which provide these, such as Keepers Nursery http://www.keepers-nursery.co.uk/default.aspx

Trees which are grafted with more than one variety are called family trees.  I don't know if there are any sources of family tree small enough to grow on a patio.

Cheers,

Gillie

http://www.kenmuir.co.uk/shopFrame.htm

I've bought several trees from Ken Muir over the years, including Minarettes, which are thriving in a very small space.

As you can see from this link, they stock family apple trees in this from too.

Hope this helps  :D

Yes - you want a small rootstock - nothing bigger than M9 I would say.  We got our cordon apple trees here http://www.ashridgetrees.co.uk/SHOPPING-CATEGORIES/Apple-Trees-Fruit-Trees. They were 2 year old plants, covered in spurs and we let them fruit (a bit) the year after planting.  We have so far harvested just over 20 lbs of Discovery apples off one tree (this year).

Good luck
