Potato blight and watering
« on: June 30, 2009, 14:55 »
If leaf wetness is a factor in the ability of blight spores to take hold -- is there any accepted wisdom on good and/or bad times to water potatoes ????????????

I suppose leaf wetness would be a factor, but not a large one, or we would know much more about watering at the optimum time of day by now.  Sadly, theres too many considerations to take into account with blight, and nothing can stop the thing once it gets a serious grip.

I once grew potatoes in a polytunnel and was careful  not to get the leaves wet.

They got blight!  It is humidity that counts unfortunately, not the wetnessof the leaves.

I was watering my potatoes at night with a sprinkler but that was before all of these blight warnings came out. Watering during a hot day could cause the humidity level to change to a level that the blight spores would like but I can't see you causing a smith period in your own garden by watering every so often.

leaf wetness is not a factor its humidity and luck. they say the watering window is after flowering but if you have had rain probably not worth it they need a large amount. bordeaux mixture sprayed on the leaves can inhibit blight

My charlottes were looking a bit dodgy today so I pulled the lot rather than take the risk. Already had a few crops from them so I'm happy  :)

Bit tricky to avoid leaf wetness with the rain we had this last couple of days... ;)
