Swedes and turnips

Swedes and turnips

I`m growing these for the first time.Can I sow in trays/modules to transplant later or do I sow direct,or can I do either way?Apart from flea beetle are they easyish to grow?

Hi

I haven't tried swede before but I am this year. Wasn't going to sow untill may though.

I was a miseraable failure with turnips last year. Sorry, best I can offer.

Direct sow.  Other than that, I can't say 'cos we get them from local farmer.  :wink:

Hi Annie,

I normally sow direct around May time. Even with a bad flea beetle attack last year I did well come cropping time.

Ahem, well I sowed loads where the peas had been, hoping for some golfball sized turnips. It must have been flea beetle I suppose, the leaves turned into a lacey kind of green doiley and then they just disappeared.

Didn't learn much from it either :oops:

I will try again though more because they look nice, I think swedes taste better.
