What to do - help needed!
« on: February 16, 2009, 16:56 »
I have a real dilemma!

Years ago I wanted to dig up my small(ish) back garden to have a veggie plot, and my hubby wouldn't let me as we had kids and a dog.  I finally got an allotment last year, but due to me being poorly (and someone had dumped a load of rubbish at the end of my plot!) I only managed to plant about 1/3 of it.  Most things were successful, but most importantly I learnt loads!

Anyway......the kids no longer play in the garden, and just before Christmas I lost my beloved dog - my hubby now wants me to grow my veggies in the garden to save on petrol (my allotment is about 5 miles away) and he thinks I would spend more time on it!  I'm sure in my heart of hearts he's right  :tongue2:  :tongue2: but a little bit of me doesn't want to give it up.  My garden is about 2/3 the size of my lotty, and I think its a perfect size.

Would I be mad to give it up?

Any thoughts please!

don't give it up! being away from home does wonders for my sanity
It doesn't matter how long it takes to sort it all out-its your allotment and why should you have to give it up? donate the garden space to your husband as a goodwil gesture :tongue2:

Agree with the first reply, keep it. You could think about a raised bed or two for home to have veg on hand. The allotment could then be the main source with the garden items to suppliment.

Also you will want to actually use the garden at times so could not turn it all over to growing.

Also as said it is a bit of an escape.

Hi Carrie, KEEP IT!!!

I have both, and with 4 smallish beds at home, I grow all the stuff that needs plenty of T.L.C.

....and salad stuff that I can pick as and when required. That I find, is really convenient. Then I have more space at the lottie for stuff that requires plenty of space. ;)

I'd keep it too, do like Bombers suggested and grow salad stuff at home and/or create a herb garden to complement all that lovely lottie grub. My oh often says dig the back garden up and grow it at home but there's no way I could produce as much or have the freedom to do as I like .

There's always chickens for the back garden  ;)

I know I posted a reply to this yesterday but I've no idea where it went
But I agree with the rest. Now that the kids and beloved pet are gone, you'll need to consider your own sanity, especially if OH has his own hobbies.
Keep the plot to grow all the bulk crops you'll want, like courgettes, potatoes, squashes, carrots, berry bushes, etc. And the home garden for quick crops like lettuces, spinach, flowers, etc

Thanks for that everybody - I do understand where Hubby is coming from but you've just given me great ideas on growing more of the bulky stuff like potatoes on the allotment!  I already grow my lettuce, soft fruit, and quick grow stuff at home.

   :lol:I knew you'd make me see sense!!!!

No, you just wanted us to agree with you so you can say to hubby, but THEY made me do it!!!!lolol

Yes, I agree with the others, don't let it go,  if you change your mind in the future, you might never get another plot!!!

Definitely keep it.  I've a front and back garden and could grow veg, but I have my lottie.  I use my garden for growing flowers instead and if I want to be completely lazy, I have my recliner and read my book.  With my allotment, both me and my hubby not only grow veg, we have also made many new friends and its great for socialising.  Even though my hubby has now retired, I still work full time, and I love the allotment because I can always wind down from a stressful day at work - I love the summer evenings (when its balmy!LOL).  I even sometimes, dig for an hour or so or do some weeding and then relax with a lovely glass of plonk - the only thing I buy which I can't grow - but no doubt one of you out there will give me some recommendations to make my own wine out of something or other :D

Sorry - I know this is a reply to a very old post of mine, but I just wanted to say - I KEPT IT!!!!

And I'm so glad I did - It is almost full of lovely fresh veggies now - managed to get hubby interested (unfortunately it took a big boys toy -  a rotivator - to do it) but its now looking really great!  And I have stuff in the garden as well! :D

Thanks everyone for the encouragement!!
