Flower help needed
« on: November 02, 2009, 11:58 »
Hi

I am looking for a plant/flower that attract insects/butterflies that I can use as ground cover/living mulch which comes back each year to plant in front of two Buddleia.

Can anyone help I know nothing at all about plants and flowers.

Many thanks

Lavendar is goog for insects, and if you buy 2 or 3 small plants, you'll be able to take plenty of cuttings in a year or two.

Limnanthes (poached egg plant) is great and it will cover ground well and, though an annual, will seed nicely around. Another is garlic chives which the hoverflies love and also sedum spectabile - a dwarf one if you can get it.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Creeping herbs like thyme, marjoram and oregano flower for ages over the summer and atrract bees like mad.

Just trim down lightly after flowering - no other care required - and you can pick bits for the kitchen.

Sedums are good too, and come in range of colours (mainly pinnks, yellow/white) and flowering times as well  :D

Might be a bit 'wild flowery' but clover is fantastic for bees and covers the ground well. If it gets out of hand just dig it in to feed the budd.

If its hot and sunny sedums are good but watch out for the really invasive ones.

Another thought..(it happens occasionally!) how about heathers?
The buddleia may mean your soil is a little alkaline but you could try Calluna rather than Erica which is a bit more tolerant. Bees love it and a couple of different ones could extend the season.
