Blood in poo, advice needed.
« on: October 17, 2008, 16:39 »
Hi Guys and Gals

Had my girls quite a while now ( 1 month ish )and everythhing seems to be going ok upto now, still waiting for my first egg tho.

I,ve started to notice what looks like blood in some of the poo, not sure which bird it's coming from but one of the Rhode Island Reds is looking a bit featherless around the neck and head and wondered if it's been picked on a bit to much and is stressed out. The Black Rocks seem to rule the roost when it comes to food time and boss the others around but I thought this was just the way it goes, also they all seem to be cramming into the nesting boxes to sleep which means some of them could have two birds sat on top of them for the duration of the night instead of using the perches.

Any advice  appreciated.

Hi PP.

It does sound like she's being picked on. The blood may be from vent pecking as well as the head and neck.

have you checked her rear end for damage ?

The other thing may be caecal poo if it is just occasional or worms possibly.

I'll post the correct link in a minute when I've found it

Another problem could be coccidiosis.

Here's a thread about anti-pecking devices http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?p=208000 and I'll find the one about poo, though it sounds like the pecking is the problem.

I'm glad you spelt that AS. :thumright: Its what I'd say it was .
I'd get some auromycin from the vets and run it through the water.

Its a green powder that you mix with the birds drinking water. I always try to keep some at hand in the chickens medicine cupboard.

Hi Everyone,

I,ve looked at the web site of Poo's  :D and it looks as though they look normal "ish" they're  more reddish than blooming on closer inspection although I'm going to keep an eye on it and post a pic next time there is one.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
