How do I explain to neighbours Composts do not smell!
« on: February 13, 2007, 10:25 »
Neighbours (in Spain) are convinced our compost will smell in the summer and attract mice/rats.  We only put on green waste and no cooked stuff, except t.bags!
The neighbours burn all their household rubbish in a  ´pit´ the fact that they leave it for a few days is neither here or there..... now who stands more of a chance of mice/rats?????

Compost is rotting well anyway :D
Pamela

ps  neighbours just do not understand the concept of composting :?

Well to be fair ...

... if you stir it up on a sunny day, it will be a bit ripe ...

It shouldn't be a problem though, but it may well attract mice and rats, they eat the seed pods and veg leftovers if they're desperate.  I've got someone living in mine.

But living in a rural area or in a town, rats and mice are all around, like it or not.

Stuck out there, she may well already have a cess pit Munty!!!  Don't know what her neighbours are on about, people in other countries are not usually as finicky about smells as the English anyway, unless of course they are English!!!  But if they burn their waste, well that smells as well.  Silly people!

Our neighbours were worried that the chickens would smell, but she never said anything after we got them, and never refused a free box of eggs!!!lol

Considering we are always surrounded by fields of cabbages and stuff, and you know what they smell like when they've been ploughed up and the old ones sit there and rot and then it rains. POOO!!!
