Hello all

What sort of price can expect to pay for chick's. I have been told rhode island reds are about £7.00 each but as i want them for eating and laying it does not seem very cost afective.

I think the price will depend on the age of the chicks.

I bought day old RIR x L. Sussex for £1.72 each.

If you want table birds have you thought about the Hubbards?

I bought 2 x day old chicks in June (actually they were only 6 hours old when we collected them.  I paid £6 for each of them - a buff sussex and a light sussex pure bred.  Saw both sets of parents and they were huge!  Luckily my broody hen took to them both straight away and have both grown up into beautiful hens....unfortunately the light sussex has turned out to be a cockrel.  Anyone fancy giving him a new home???

I'm afraid thats way over the top for LS day olds.

I paid £1.50 p for a dozen pure LS eggs and hatched my own under a broody. There's a great deal of profiteering going on with poultry today.

Having paid too much for my girls, i discovered a local free range farmer was selling his older chooks for £1 each, these aren't mega old, just too old for him, and they are Rhode Island Reds.  I would recommend that if you have a similar farmer near you, then ask them!!  I wish i had!!

So what is the best way of finding out about where to buy eggs from? I would like to pick them up rather than have them posted to me. I would love to have some LS or RIR but not sure where to get them from!!

Have a look in the back section of Smallholder/Fancy Fowl magazine there are lots of adverts in them for eggs and poultry.

Pure breed chicks can be expensive, but as we only have hybrids and meat chicks, we pay 50p each for our meat chicks 80p delivered!  and about 75p for our layer chicks at day old, but if you only have a few at a time they are £1

I have pure bred LS and maran pullets. At the moment the eggs are very small but in the new year, I'd be delighted to send you some eggs just for the price of the postage. Just remind me of my promise next year in the spring.
