Tall lettuce
« on: August 06, 2008, 22:37 »
Hi
Since May  I have had some "salad bowl loose leaf lettuce" growing and  as you probably all know it is cut and come again.  These lettuces are now about 20 inches tall.  Do they get bitter at this point or do certain lettuces always get this tall.  No sign of a flower head or seeds.  They look a bit like the pic of lettuces in DD's post entitled "Mole's Seeds Trail Grounds Open Day - Photo Heavy!"

i think it's a sign of em running to seed and I'd expect them to be bitter but have a taste  :D  Chicories are quite bitter but can be less so when torn up or shredded apparently so you could do that with your lettuce

I agree with compostqueen, it's probably running to seed. It might be best to cut it now and grow another batch - you may have time to get one in.

Agreed here too - same happened with my 'cut and come again' Italian gourmet mix. It's still thriving, but 2ft tall and only the guinea pig enjoys it now
As FCG says, you probably have time to grow more. I've just sown more, lettuce is a quick cropper and it's still only just August  :)

Don't you just hate pulling healthy plants up though.  I had already grown some more anyway but in a supermarket mushroom box, commandered by moi.  So these ones are closer together.  Could transplant a few though into raised bed with space left by tall ones.  That should retard their for a bit.

OH :afro:  has plenty of his Rom lettuces anyway and some italian ones and some mixed leaves  and some lambs lettuce seedlings come to that.
   :pig:

So I will go for it............maybe
