Seeded Leeks
« on: August 04, 2008, 20:01 »
Anyone know why so many of my leeks are starting to go to seed?

Is the amount of rain or something to do with the planting

I am most depressed at the thought :(

The allium family (which includes leeks) is directly affected by daylight length, and perhaps where you're located, and even surrounding factors like trees, have put the leeks into early seed making mode. Normally they don't seed until the 2nd year in the ground, but there's always exceptions to the rule.

Snap off any seed stalks as soon as you see them and this should help your crop. Take note of how much shade this area gets and whether or not you want to plant there in the future.
Also, if they get too dry, they'll go into seed mode regardless of sun - it's the natural reaction of all plants. Poke your finger deep into the soil of the leek row to determine dryness. Leeks do like as much water as they can get (without swamping them).
