Poorly Chook

Split from Poo Gallery (by Aunty) to give better chance for discussion in the Hen House

I have wormed mine. It did not make any difference. How are you treating yours, Helen? I think that mine is eggbound but I wanted to give her a chance as long as she is not suffering. At first she would eat only if I hand fed her boiled potato and treats, but she is eating better now. She will eat scratch and sunflower hearts, so most of the grains do get digested.

I just found her looking very poorly and had to put her to sleep. I am sure that it was eggbinding because of her age. I don't have the stomach for a post mortem.

Are real shame for you. I know how you feel I lost a chuck at the weekend.  How is the other hen coping?  I am sure you know they don't like being alone.

The others will be OK Roughly. I now have 2 left. The old one likes her own company and the young one manages to put up with her tantrums and is pretty robust. Thanks for your sympathy.

It could have been azubah, or egg peritonitis, or a few other things :(

You did the best thing for her, she was very poorly  :!:

Thanks aunty. I did think that I was posting in the wrong place but did not know what to do.

I agree with you about egg peritonitis rather than an egg stuck, but we will never know for certain. I am pretty sure it was not worms, but think that stress played a big part as she was very excitable.

Does anyone know what proportion of young hens become internal layers when they are due to start laying?

My two remaining hens are happy today as if nothing has happened but they were extra noisy yesterday. I think that it was because they were used to me bringing out frequent treats to try to encourage the poorly one to eat and were wondering why I had stopped.
