Hen's legs are now yellow
« on: November 08, 2008, 10:44 »
I'm new to hen keeping and have four regular brown hens which I think are Warren Crosses.  They are about 28 weeks, are happy, full of beans and to the non-experienced eye they seem to have developed well.
One of them, Gloria, has always been a little timid and I am unsure if she has ever laid, nevertheless she appears content.  However in the last week or so her legs seem to have changed colour from a pale straw colour (like the rest) to a golden yellow.  She's always been the first one to put herself to bed but during the last week she hasn't come out for her evening stroll around the garden (security light on) with her sisters, she's always done so before.  Apart from that I think she is ok - during the day she seems to be eating, socialising and is currently lounging in the soil with one of her sisters.  I'm just concerned about the change of colour of legs and appreciate I may be looking for other signs that aren't there.  Can anyone advise me?  She's a cool hen and I'd like to know she is ok.

Nothing to worry about. Her legs have always been yellow but she's coming into condition when she's about to lay. As she goes through her egg laying cycle, you may even note that her leg colour might fade a little too.

Thank you very much, that's a great weight off my mind.  So she may actually lay then? - wonderful!  Keeping the girls is even more enjoyable and rewarding than I ever imagined.

Most of our 300 Amberlinks had pinky legs at first, although around 20 had blue legs which some will remember worried me a little, but now they are coming into laying period, they are turning yellow too!!!

Feeding a feed high in corn will also make the legs a brilliant yellow and will often add a "brassiness" to a white bird as well. Brassiness is a yellowish tint to the white plumage.
