ha ha, i normally do that with shoes!!!
can i ask you, we got our babies in april, so we havent experianced a winter with them, im just concerned that they wont be able to go out in their run much, due to the cold and wet, what should i do for the best?
also should they really come indoors or could a garage be ok? trouble is their isnt much light in the garage.
i just wanted to be prepared for it now, rather than get to autumn/winter then panic!
any tips would be great, thanks

I would bring them into a garage if possible. If you have the room and the run is movable you could put the run indoors or in the garage. I put mine out in the winter only if it is dry on the floor but my run is slabbed. They have the run of the shed floor when wet :D
They can cope with the cold but not wet and cold or draughty.
They would probably cope better with cold than with central heating as heat effects them more.

you could cover them but over at night or in rain but they can get damp if the cover is not breathable and then you can get fungal problems..

I have had mine indoors in a kids paddleing pool before to give them excercise :?
Alot of breeders keep their pigs in garages and leave the lights on for so many hours a day.

I use the Guinea pig waste on my veg beds to great effect.

I always bag it and leave it in the black bag for a month or so to break down a bit first and then use it as a bottom layer in my bed with compost on the top.

Result ..picking courgettes in early June :-)

Can also be added to Compost bin...

Piggies do not recycle their poop in the same way rabbits do and it is full of stuff the plants can use.

Thanks for the advice Cleo.We get about six bin liners a week so will let it sit in the bag's for a while until needed.Never thought about using it to bring the level up in out raised bed's so will try that aswell.

You can also dig it into the garden in the winter or use as a mulch.
I dig in because I feel it's neater.
They hey presto in the spring...fertilized garden good to go.

Also the worms love it.

I started off with 2 guineapigs and ended up with 25- not from breeding them together I bought more and bred from them, the first ones were too old, I ´rescued´them.  I´d have them now if it wasn´t so hot here.   Mine stayed outside att winter in their cages and I covered them in the evening with plastic and bubble wrap.  I never lost any from cold.  I used to move the run about the lawn, we had never had such a good fertilized lawn.  :D
