I have a lot of Guinea pig bedding from a nearby Guinea pig breeder. It's a mix of straw, sawdust and waste. There are a few posts in this forum  suggesting using this stuff as compost material and as a mulch on fruit trees, but how about using it immediately as a medium for growing potatoes in?
I was thinking of laying some down, covering with wood chips and planting spuds in it, but, is this safe ?

For root crops, I would not have any direct contact with the fresh manure/waste.  There is a risk from E. coli bacteria and other pathogens.

Recommendations for similar materials say that if you place waste on the ground for 4 or more months, then incorporate, wait 20 months before harvesting root crops.  If the waste is on the ground for LESS than 4 months, the advice is wait 38 months.  Is that excessive? Use your best judgement.

Personally I would plant above-ground crops for a couple years, or compost it well for a couple years before applying.
