New chooks (Pics coming soon)
« on: May 26, 2008, 08:02 »
Yesterday I travelled for half an hour to collected my eagerly awaited POL hens. I purchased 2 Rhode Stars, 2 Amber Stars and one Black Rock. They are very nervous and don't like being picked as I have found out. I have several scram marks on my hand and arm. I let them out yesterday for about 1/2 an hour the amber stars went under the coop and the rest stayed indoors. Has anybody got any advice as I have hit a blank.??

Thanks !!!

Fingers x'd they are more settled today and they were as shy due to travelling.
Congrats on your girls though - I am new to chicken keeping but it's nice to read breeds I know!

I have found my girls don't really 'know' veggies in a dish. But respond to 'scattering' breadcrumbs or grit. :) obviously what they were used to. :)

Hope your girls are braver this morning when you let them out. :)

dried mealworms fetched all mine out of their "omg where are we state"
You can get them from garden centers etc in wild bird section
You'll have them eating out of your hand in no time

But don't go mad with the treats Little & often

Slowly slowly catchy monkey or chicken

My Amber did exactly the same thing her first day here - took me ages to find her (there's only about an 8" gap below the house, none of others had ever gone in there   ) - and my Bluebelle hardly peeped out of the door for three days.  Three weeks later they are the most adventurous of the lot ...

Agree with all the above - basically keep their food near to home and if you have a run, keep them in for a day or two so they get the idea - make sure that they get all their treats in the run as well, rather than out and about - mine were putting themselves to bed within 24 hours so fingers crossed yours will already be settling down.

Mine still don't let me pick them up though, unless its night time and they are settled in the house - so don't worry, they may not look like they want to be friends but you keep feeding them and they will love you forever  :!:    :!:
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!
