Well one of our bats is coming to the end of her life she is unwell and sleeps constantly.  She has done some very strange egg then and back end is always wet.

not sure what to do, wife thinking its time to let her go...... so hows the easest way to do it....

ok, right she may not be coming to the end but may need some treatment from the vets. Perhaps she has had problems with soft eggs (hence the wet rear end) and may need antibiotics plus some added calcium to firm up the shells (a vet would be best to advise on this). If she needs putting down then a vet could do this for you if you don't feel up to it - very few people do. If you do decide to do the deed it needs to be quick and as humane as possible. If you use the search facilaty on this page you should be able to find a post that explains one method (of stretching then twisting to snap the neck) but others use the broom handle method, the axe or some who breed meat birds stun them.

well sad to say she went to the vets but did not come home, OH was quite upset but he left her say her good byes then the vet did the dead. Only down point was the vet coming out with a buket right afterwards!!!

He did say we were lucky to have her this long and must really be looking after the bats. The other ones are no different to the now 18month old girls!!!

Sorry  :(

Was your vet a rural one or a city one?

We had to have one of our ex batts put down, but I'm not so sure they knew what was wrong or what to do with her (and they said as much before we took her, 'we're not experts in chickens')  So I can't help wondering if city vets are putting down when they could be treated.  Not saying this to cause more upset, just a thought

So sorry to hear your news - just remember you showed her how much more there is to life than existing inside a cage, you gave her a real taste of the good life!
