raspberries and sunflowers?
« on: May 22, 2008, 21:12 »
probably a very daft question I'm afraid.

I came home from work today to discover that my darling wife had planted sunflowers inbetween my beautifull row of rasberries

She has been asking for something to grow them up for a while and is 8 months pregnant - so couldn't be too cross, actually it was quite funny :D .

Any thoughts? not about my inability to support my heavily pregnant wife   - but the rasberries - any reason why it should be a problem? or is it ingenious, acidental intercropping?

rasbs are glen ample and were planted this autumn.

thanks

Wouldn't have thought it too much of a problem. If they were only planted last autumn the rasps won't be too dense yet.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Raspberry canes aren't able to support sunflowers - unless a dwarf hybrid - rather the other way around...

I don't know, depends how close, and how many, a sunflower can be massive. :D

My advice would be to nurture the sunflowers right now, even if it means ripping the rasps out!

good advice puravida

she planted them inbetween my tenderly looked after rasberries because I had built a good solid wire and post support system for them gobs, though maybee she did think the sunflowers might strangle them

they should be fine .,believe it or no but raspberries DO NOT like full sun ,,, remember to save the seed heads and you can hang them from the wire supports to fed the finches in winter .cut when the seed head has blackish seeds in it then hang in a dry place till the bad weather hits

Very true, so just thought, some massive sunflowers might be a bit of a competition for moisture.
