You think Sally ?

In my experience, thats nothing like always being the case, but unfortunately I have nothing like the answer to what is a big problem.

No need to raise your eye brows at me Bodger

You have no answer as you admit.  My answer will at least give new keepers the best chance of stress free success.  It may cost them a few pounds more but that is not a bad thing if it means they have a good experience rather than a bad one.  A bit like insurance, paying for something which may never happen, but might  :!:

There are a lot of people who charge a lot for chickens like £15 for a hybrid hen. You should be able to pay £10 to £12 for a average purebred like a welsummer, Rhode Island Red , Light Sussex and so on. Ive seen them for sale on various poultry sites from £15 to £25 pounds which is well over the top. The birds that have been quoted to you are nice birds and lay well but the price is rather high.
If you dont know any different then you would pay for them without thinking. There are many ways you could get hens for a lower price like an auction. I see hybrid layers that are the same as they use in the battery and free range farms sell from £1 to £3 pounds. There is a breeder near me who had some beautiful hybrids for sale i dont know what they were but they were a rich red colour at £4 each.
Its good that youve posted this on here as you get a better idea from other people.
If you pay £15 its £3 - £5 more than i would pay but you could pay a lot more like ive said there are people who sell hens at £25.
I hope you get your hens at a good price let us know how you get on.

No not at all. Battery farmed chicks will come having been innoculated againt a number of the more common poultry diseases.

They will be vaccinate as Bodger say, and quite a few people on here have found re-homing some a very worthwhile experience.  They just need a bit of extra tlc until they get used to their new life and strengthen up their weak muscles.

Because of what they are being used for they will have been treated for disease. I have ex batts like a lot of other forum members and can hopefully reassure you that they become the most friendly lovely birds. They may look ropey when you get them but very quickly perk and feather up. I am currently waiting for another rescue so that I can have some more to add to my ever growing flock.
Happiest in the countryside.
Breathe deeply, and let the butterflies fly in formation!
