Greenhouse or Potting Shed
« on: March 17, 2008, 09:02 »
Hello All,

Wonder if somebody could advise me on what would be best to use for my seeds. I have just started to sow seeds, but don't know where would be the best place to put them.

The greenhouse is covered in bubble wrap, and I have started off my peppers and sweetpeas in there, but I now want to start tomatoes, butternut squash, and lots of other seeds, but truth be known, I don't know anything about gardening, and really what is a potting shed used for?

The potting shed is currently my cats sleeping house, we put a little cat flap in there, and she comes and goes as she likes, but hopefully she won't dig anything up, but who knows.
Any advice appreciated.

hi soap lady , you need to start your peppers somwhere warm and humid if poss in a heated propagator or as suggested unheated propagator on a southfacing window cill ( tou can use clear plastic bottles with the bottom cut off as an alternative to commercially available propagators) I wouldnt start squash till next month unless you can supply a warm well lit spot (heated green house conservatory etc) The potting shed is where you pot on seedlings and prepare cuttings etc before putting them in the greenhouse cold frames etc hope thats a start ( I can recommend Carol Kliens book "Grow your Own Veg" It gives you a lot of information) Hope that helps !! But I agree life begins on the window cill!
Too many seeds so little plot

my house has no windowsills    Next house will have

I get seeds going in my shed windows, propped up on all manner of scaffolding to make the most of the available light

I've got the following:

Leeks in growbag compost in a cat litter tray, which is in my office overnight and in the greenhouse during the day - about 70 showing

Tomato seeds in old kitchen roll cardboard tubes cut into 75mm lenths and filled with seed compost, and placed in an old baking tin - in my office awaiting germination (35 of them)

Cucumbers and butternut squashes in Muller lite yogurt pots in my office awaiting germination (4 of each)

Recommend growbag compost. But seed compost if you prefer. Now's a good time to get sowing. Soon be time for courgettes!

Recommend John's book. It goes right back to basics.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

My house has become a giant propogator, but starting to worry as the melon is looking for somewhere to climb, the Pumkins are leaning towards the Peppers and Toms are 6 in high!!!!!!!! no sign of Cucumbers yet although sown 2 weeks ago,,
Am i too early with everything? as i am new to the wonders of veg growing, always been a bedding plant and bulb grower.

I just got over excited as i have a new little greenhouse to fill and a belfast sink.
