My daughter has chickens and I want to fertilize my lawn.  I think the chickens are likely to eat the fertilizer.

We live in the suburbs of Minneapolis, MN USA.

1.  Will chickens eat lawn fertilizer?  Ammonium sulfate and other combinations that might have nitrogen and small amounts of phosphate and potassium, is what I plan to use.

2.  If so, will it harm them?

3.  If so, then we will have to keep them penned up, for a while after I fertilize.  How long will we need to keep them penned up?

I think any fertiliser needs to be well watered in so pen the birds just before rain is forecast and apply it then .

Normally well chickened lawns get plenty of natural fertiliser!

I figured as much - thought it was worth asking as the ladies don't care much for being penned up!  And, they let you know it!!!

We only have 3 chickens on about 2 acres of lawn.  That's not enough to cover the fertilizer requirement (plus, our soil is pretty pathetic).  The rabbits (only 4 of them) contribute some, but still not enough.
