Carrot Fly.What do commercial growers use ?
« on: April 17, 2008, 23:03 »
Carrots seem to be the most problematical veg to grow since their doesn't seem to be an easily available product available to counteract the dreaded Carrot Fly.(apart from putting physical barriers up and growing at 2 ft above the soil)

Surely the commercial growers must use something ?

Is it just that the Health and Safety Nannies don't trust us home gardeners with such a product ?

Is there anything out there that is available to us ?

Lots and lots of insecticide, my old tutor used to say carrots where one of the most treated crops out and she would never eat one from a supermarket with out washing and peeling first.
This might be of interest

I agree totally.

I'm not going to spray my stuff with things that'll kill me just to get a decent crop of carrots.

I just wondered if they'd managed to devellop a "safeish" spray.

What do "Organic" producers use ?

I know "Organic" doesn't always mean safe either, but there just doesn't seem to be anything in the marketplace to guard against Carrot Fly.

If you want to be organic or not spray then grow your carrots under fleece or enviromesh
Everyone should grow their own veg and know where their food is coming from even if it is only a one pot on a patio or balcony Grow Something!!

Floating mulch they use, I believe. Some areas just don't have them either.

Otherwise, Defra advise to discard top inch of shop bought carrot, so full of toxins.

If any of you chicken Keepers use Diatomaceous Earth for controlling Red Mite etc. Then apparently it can also be used for carrot fly. I am going to give it a go this year. The two links will tell you something about it.

I'm just going to put my 2ft fleece aroun my carrot crop like I did last year.  I also grew some in that old bath, but the wind kept catching the fleec on that, but I got a better crop from the ground grown with the 2ft high fleece around them, until I decided to take the fleece off!!!!! lol

 Because it gets peeled I don't wash, the dog gets the tops, he's nearly 10 now & runs about like he's 5, doesn't look 10 at all, maybe those toxins would be good for us ...........keeping looking younger

I'd grow in tubs, or cover in fleece/environmesh. I came across this article a couple of years ago... Commercially grown carrots are amongst the worst fruit/veg for chemical residues...
