Assuming your plants are in rows, I find that when they've grown tall enough a cane either end with a string either side of the ferns about 2' from the ground supports them adequately.

If the row is very long you would obviously need more than 2 canes, as you would if it's particularly windy where you are - just use more than one set of strings to break the row up so the whole lot doesn't collapse like a row of dominoes.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I've struggled to support them in the past. My latest attempt has been pretty successful and involved using electric fence posts (from amazon) with (thin) bamboo canes in between to support the ferns as shown in this picture-you can keep added or adjust dependent on need. The string-that was last year's efforts and didn't work too well but I've threaded it through the fence posts to make it taut.

This is also now my favoured method for pea support (Mangetout and sugar snap). So easy to construct and take down

I found it work well with the same idea of JayG's and I also cut 1/4 of the fern down so they are not too tall and works well.

Thanks for the answers, I came up with an idea very similar to Potty Plotty Lotty.
