Asparagus?
« on: May 27, 2007, 20:37 »
Well I planted some out last autumn into 2 beds,All have come up in one bed but only 2 in the 2nd.So my question is will any thing come up now do you think?I don`t think the crowns rotted as these are raised beds but there was some evidence of squirrel activity.I`m tempted just to try moving the 2 good plants so I can use this bed for my excess toms and peppers, any thoughts...

Munty is the sparrowgrass expert.  Try sending him a PM??

I think they'd be up if they were coming up.  My first attempts (from seed this year) are only 2" high so I have no first-hand experience.

If they're not up by now, they're not coming up at all.

You could try moving the survivors in the autumn after cutting off the old foiliage.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If your asparagus were planted last fall, then you can safely move the 2 good ones now and use the space as you planned. When digging up the 2 good ones, try to get a good sized dirt ball with the roots, preferably after you've watered them well so the 'mud' holds. You're not cropping this year, so don't worry about the move. You might want to check the non survivors to see what happened.

As for feeding them, they like a bit of lime in the soil to sweeten and some compost yearly.
