Outdoor Cucumber - nipped-in waist!
« on: August 16, 2016, 13:11 »
Growing Marketmore, and they are just coming online.

But they are bent like a banana, with a nipped-in waist! What's next? A 'thigh gap' on my forked carrots and parsnips?

Any suggestions welcome....

I'm also growing Marketmore, first time I've grown cucumbers.  Is it irregular watering maybe? I've had all sorts of shapes and sizes, to start with just little tiddly things but getting some decent sized ones now, some thin, some fat, and today whilst poking around under the leaves got stung by a bee going about his business! Ouch!

Might be worthwhile doing a little research about effects of magnesium deficiency and/or cucumber mosiac virus on cucumber fruits. Compare images and description of effects with the symptoms you're experiencing in your garden.
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

I would say its uneven watering. I've got some peculiar shaped cucumbers this year because we were away for a while and they bulge in and out at intervals.

I have a few outside plants and a few under glass. My outside cucumbers have been doing the same recently and I'm sure it's due to insufficient water. The greenhouse cucumbers are fine because I water them when I do my Toms. The wonky cucumbers still taste OK however but are a bit harder.
