Tomato seedlings
« on: January 20, 2016, 12:03 »
Good Morning

My tomatoes (Costoluto, Ruby, Amish Paste) have all germinated now (under a bit of heat - 5days). The seed head is sticking to the top of the leaves. Is this normal? Can they be removed without damaging the leaves or should i just leave them do their thing in breaking free?

Thanks
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

If the seed case is sticking to one of the seed leaves there is no problem.   Even if it is sticking to both leaves and clamping the tips of the leaves together it usually frees itself, although I do very gently separate the leaves just so it looks right.

Just hope that, even in France, the weather will be warm enough if you sow now.  I usually wait till March
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Thank you for your reply. I'll leave them to it then as they're only attached to the seed leaves. I'm not intending to plant yet, they've just germinated. I have them under grow lights and will move to a cold frame when they achieve adequate growth.

Even here, it's cold! (although not as cold as UK, of course!) February yet to come and it usually brings winter to the fore.

Thanks again

Mine do that in the early stages and, as said, I leave them to it.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
