3 out of 4 broody!
« on: May 05, 2015, 08:36 »
I know this breed is particularly susceptible but I am almost at my whit's end!

Three of my four pekins are broody!  Primrose has been broody for about 2 weeks now, maybe a bit more.  Snowdrop joined her last week and Pansy yesterday!  Primrose has been separated so she can't sit on the nest since going broody, whilst on her own or free ranging she seemed fairly normal.  Now more of them are broody it's simply worse, they just snuggle down together anywhere - it's driving me mad! I have just been separating them in a separate run - I've read about the "wire bottom suspended cage" thing but I don't have one and I'm honestly not sure about it either.

I read recently about someone using ice in the nest box to deter them. You could try an ice block wrapped in fabric you don't want to burn their bums or buy a couple of cheap packs of frozen peas  that you can alternate and re freeze - do mark bags not for consumption!!! Again wrap packet. I would think peas better as will shape to nest.  :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Can you get hold of a rabbit hutch freecycle/gumtree/preloved,condition does not matter. A very strong cardboard box would work as well.
Remove bottom and replace with mesh or chicken wire.
Stand of the floor on bricks if cardboard box option out of rain.
Have a small dish of food and water and put hen in there.
Longest sitter leave for a few days, others less and then remove to see
if still broody
We use half a hutch with wired floor for guinea pig..he can pop through door and reopen it to gain entry, so have used it once this year for our pekin. Next broody she is having eggs.

I'm changing tactics this year  ;)

no separating in drafty cages etc. - can't be bothered

going to leave them to it and see how long before they get bored of staring into space

I've found they don't get bored as well as not eat and drink. Roberta has always moaned when taken off eggs and loses a lot of weight for a small hen.

it usually takes mine 3 weeks to stop being broody, the ones I have are very experienced broodies and they know to eat and exercise twice a day without any prompting so dont lose too much weight.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'm lucky enough to be home all day so can get the broody out for a scoff

have tried the shutting her out of the coop and drafty cage before which works but it is more of a pain than getting her out to feed
