Chicks quick head shake
« on: May 09, 2014, 10:28 »
It has been a while since I visited and I meant with my first message to proudly introduce my new 4 day old chicks since I brought my hen and cockerel to an other adress!

But: since last night 2 of my 3 new chicks give their heads really quick shakes all the time: even when they try to sleep, every few seconds: prr!
So first I need to take care of this issue.

They move about happily, eat, drink, play, chat, grow, poo is nice and dry, I can't find anything crawling about on them or in their 'box', they don't srcratch their heads, no stuck food in their ... 'first stomac?', 3 times a day they get clean cooked (and cooled) drinking water, ...
One of them had a day of 'less food': Then I put the food in a grinder and she started eating well again. It is food for chicks but the bigger bits seemed to big for her.

Help?

Thank you for your reply.

I think so: I have a lamp hanging down. They don't sleep right under it but just around.. I put a little box in their 'coop' so they can choose how close they want to be to the lamp.
This because I noticed the black chick moving away from it more than the brown and white...

Can it have anything to do with being to cold?

chicks under a lamp should always have the option to move away if they are too warm by having the space to do so. If they were all huddled together under the lamp they would be too cold and this does not seem to be the problem here.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

... the bedding is nice and dry, today it is worse than yesterday; yesterday there where less shakes.

I'll just keep checking on them as I do allready: they are still happy, active, eat well, poo well, grow like ... nothing else! :)

When I find out what it is I will post.

I read THIS and down to the bottom of the page, it was suggested that the chicks seem to shake their head a lot when you or others are talking or making noises, less so when quiet.  It might be worth investigating?

Try apple cider vinegar

If using this use for only one week in four and never add to a metal drinker.  :)

Thank you all for your replies and thinking with me.

I appologise for not responding faster: I was very distracted by my chicks and eggs: Yesterday three happy little chicks were born!! I am so happy.

The shaking has stopped entirely: Maybe it was the noise of people or... who knows. The chicks are 16 days now and so active and happy with beautifull colours, wings and feathers starting all over the place  :D

I will soon post pictures of all 6! by now. As I am typing one of the 'older chicks' is taking a nap in my cardigan on my chest <3 <3 <3
