What likes to eat onions and shallots?
« on: April 12, 2014, 13:17 »
Weeding round the onions and shallots this morning and spotted that about half of them have been munched. They are only a few cm high anyway at the moment and some have either been eaten right back to the set or just had the ends taken off (like a pair of scissors attacked them). Is it likely to be slugs or could it be the ducks I saw wandering around my plot this morning? I put slug pellets down just in case but don't really want to net all my onions IMF I can help it as I have to cover most other things as it is!

I've only had experience of slugs and snails eating the tops of mine and they tend to leave messy damage, rather than the neat damage you describe. It might have been the ducks.

Hmmm... Fencing the whole plot isn't an option as we aren't allowed so I might have to put some more netting over them then. It wouldn't surprise me if we have rabbits - we have squirrels, deer, slugs/snails, I had a dead rat on the plot this morning and then the ducks. I have to fight off all forms of nature here  ;)

I suspect that the ducks were eating slugs. What happens if the ducks return and pick up half dead slugs? Perhaps you now need to net them to protect the ducks.

Possibly but if they do then they need to eat an awful lot more! I only use the organic pellets which are less harmful to other wildlife I believe. I can't not pellet though as I wouldn't have any crops left. I've never seen the ducks come that far up from the streams and canals before so was probably just a one off
