[Kate and her Ducks]

We have just found a little copse of plum trees in the corner of the field in our new place in Shropshire. They have been there for many many years and self seeded so there are trees of all ages. They look a bit like Victoria but more purplish. Our neighbour  who is in her 70s said they tasted like lammas plums but couldn't really tell us anything else about them, even if that was a variety or use for them. Very hard to find anything on 'internet as it just brings up stuff on the lammas festival.

Does anyone know anything about them?

Well, I've not had any success either, but believe the Lammas plum is just a local name rather than a variety. Lammas Day, August 1st comes from the Anglo-Saxon "hlaf mas" meaning loaf mass which was the festival of the wheat harvest. The AS chronicle also describes it as the "feast of first fruits."

Lammas plums would probably be Early Laxtons, cos they fruit at that time, the first of the year
