« on: August 07, 2012, 20:26 »
Hi - I have a customer that has this big plum tree which they dont know if they are edible or not.. They are about 30 - 35 mm in diameter - a bit smaller than normal plums.  They look like ornamentals.. Can anyone help..

Looks like a cherry plum to me. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

Me too.  Prunus cerasifera Nigra or purple cherry plum.  I think most make jam out of them as they are not so great raw, but never tried them myself  :)

We have lots of those trees growing wild next to a footpath. Loads of people  pick them. I have used them for jam, but have not had time this year unfortunately.

They make much nicer jam (more tart and fruity) than cultivated plums but the stones are more fiddly because they're smaller (and how about plum vodka for Christmas pressies?)
