Chick not opening its eyes
« on: July 22, 2013, 13:08 »
I have a chick that hatched out in the incubator today.  S/he had been under broody mum but broody mum pooped over all the eggs and got shell stuck all over her undercarriage so needed a clean up and I put the remaining eggs in the inccy.

Two hatched out successfully and are now happily back under broody mum.  This last chick hatched out this morning.  it took a while and the membrane stuck to its feathers with a little blood as well.  I gently dabbed with a damp paper towell and eventually the membrane came off.

The chick seems fine in itself; however it has not opened its eyes yet.  I have not seen this in a chick.  I am wondering if anyone else has come across this and could advise whether it might correct itself in time.

At the moment it is back in the inccy drying off with the plan to return it to mother when she has settled this evening.  However I don't want to do this if it still hasn't opened its eyes.  :(

I have had quail chicks like that and thought they would not make it but they did.  If there was still blood on the shell it probably wasn't quite ready to hatch so might take a little while longer to catch up with the others.  If it does have something wrong with it there won't be a lot you can do.  I hope the little one make it.   :)

Well I'm relieved to say that the chick is opening its eyes now.   :)

Anhbc, I agree that perhaps it was not quite ready to come out of the shell.  Difficult to know what to do for the best.

That is good news, I hope your broody will take her back without any fuss.

It is really hard not to intervene, I would do the same but sometimes they do not thrive.
